HEAT Community Partners
The Humber Environmental Action Team is a community-based organization that works with a broad range of partners to achieve its mission and goals. These include educational institutions, other local community groups and NGOs, foundations, as well as government agencies and committees. HEAT works with partners on community projects, awareness campaigns, policy research, public education, outreach, and advocacy efforts.
Action to Restore a Clean Humber (ARCH)
ARCH is an environmental group that aims to promote and enhance the Humber watershed area. HEAT works with ARCH and other community partners on tree plantings and other projects along the watershed.
Canadian Heritage River System
The Canadian Heritage Rivers System is a conservation program to promote, protect, and enhance Canada’s rivers. HEAT works with CHRS to promote the Humber River, which was recently designated as a Canadian Heritage River.
City of Toronto Environmental Task Force / Sustainability Roundtable (SRT)
HEAT works with the City of Toronto on city-sponsored environmental policy forums and other planning initiatives, including an education and awareness workgroup to improve outreach to schools, colleges and universities across the GTA.
Clean Air Partnership / Toronto Atmospheric Fund
The Clean Air Partnership is a City of Toronto agency to promote environmental initiatives across the Greater Toronto Area. HEAT works with the Partnership on education and outreach initiatives to improve communication with campus communities and encourage their participation in local environmental initiatives. HEAT is also an active participant in the annual City of Toronto Smog Summit, an initiative of the Clean Air Partnership.
Earth Day Canada organizes Earth Day / Earth Week activities across Canada, including tree plantings, environmental clean-ups, and other programs designed for positive environmental impact in the community. HEAT partners with Earth Day both as a sponsor and event organizer for Earth Week at Humber College as well as contributes volunteers to support Earth Week activities in Toronto.
Heritage Toronto aims to preserve the City’s unique heritage, cultural, and historical values. HEAT works with Heritage Toronto to promote the ecological significance of the Humber River, the Humber Arboretum and the surrounding areas.
The Humber Arboretum is a conservation area and centre for urban ecology. HEAT works with the Humber Arboretum on conservation, clean-up, and restoration projects along the Humber River as well as promoting the new Centre for Urban Ecology located on site.
HEAT is based out of Humber College and through the Environmental Committee works with the College to improve environmental performance in key areas, including recycling and waste reduction, energy efficiency, improving campus and local community surroundings, as well as environmental planning and sustainability initiatives.
HEAT works with the Humber Watershed Alliance, a community council, to promote the Humber River and develop strategies and programs to protect the watershed area.
The Student Environmental Network is a major environmental movement for highschool students in Toronto and is supported by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). HEAT has worked with the student network on a range of education, awareness, and policy initiatives.
The Think Food Program is an initiative of the Ontario Association of Food Banks to encourage the recycling of inkjet cartridges for printers. HEAT partners with the program by sponsoring the project at Humber College and by promoting the program externally on various policy forums that HEAT participates in.
Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA)
The TRCA is the conservation authority for the Greater Toronto Area and develops and implements programs to protect the local environment and watershed areas. HEAT works with the TRCA on conservation efforts, including tree plantings, clean-ups, and watershed restoration activities.
Voluntary Challenge & Registry Program
HEAT works with the Voluntary Challenge Registry, a national program to promote reductions in emissions among office buildings, institutions, factories, and other buildings. HEAT operates out of Humber College and has worked with the Program and the College to reduce emission levels for all facilities on campus through energy efficiency projects and awareness initiatives. HEAT also promotes the VCR program externally among its partner organizations.
