About the Organization
The Humber Environmental Action Team is a non-profit environmental organization focusing on building awareness on campus and in the local community. Based out of Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, HEAT works on projects to raise environmental consciousness among all members of the campus community, including students, faculty, and staff as well as residents in the local area.
HEAT achieves much of its goals by developing effective communications programs to improve awareness on the issues and by organizing and participating in community projects to help protect natural habitat and enhance the local environment.
HEAT works in an area known for its environmental significance. The Humber River is the largest watershed in the Greater Toronto Area and has recently been declared a Canadian Heritage River, recognizing its important cultural and historical value to the local community. The campus is also situated next to the Humber Arboretum, a conservation area and centre for urban ecology and sustainability.
Funded by its partners in the campus community, HEAT is governed by an Advisory Board with most of its work carried out by a team of dedicated volunteers. Since its founding in 1995, the philosophy of the organization has always been guided by the following principles:
- We are all responsible for care of our natural environment; therefore solutions to these problems require a community approach that involves all stakeholders;
- Advocating for change is best achieved by emphasizing positive environmental action through public awareness, individual responsibility, and involvement in community projects;
- People are more likely to take responsibility for their actions and assume ownership of their community when they are informed about the issues and see that others are making an effort;
- The drive for more awareness must be supported by strong participation in local community projects, which in turn strengthens our awareness goals.
